Lanterns have been a popular method of lighting for centuries. The earliest examples were “glazed” with thin sheets of horn to protect the candle from draughts and wind, in England they were known as “lanthornes”. The hanging lantern as we know it today gained popularity in the 18th century, when they were glazed with glass and became more ornate whilst retaining their practical advantages over light fittings with exposed candles.

Our Windsor style lanterns are a popular design due to their traditional form typical of the late 18th, early 19th century. This solid brass hexagonal lantern features scrolled metalwork and is a larger version of our standard sized Windsor lantern. Normally they are fitted with a single tier 6 light pendant fitting, however for this particular lantern the client required a greater output to light the staircase in which it would hang, so we created a more decorative 2 tier 12 light inner pendant. In addition at the bottom of the central pendant there is a low voltage capsule lamp which has been added to act as an emergency light.

A customer found a lantern in their basement that had not been unused for many years, but it needed a lot of work. A new 3-way central pendant wired with lamp holders was made, as the original had been lost, as well as manufacturing four missing leaf scrolls and one turned finial from the base. Any unbroken panes of glass were removed so that we could chemically clean the metalwork to remove all old paint, dirt and putty. Then apply two coats of red oxide paint inside and gild exterior of lantern in pure gold leaf. Replacement flat and curved glass was sourced and fitted and original glass cleaned.
